Trinidad and Tobago’s women national football team, the “Soca Princesses”, concluded their first tour of England unbeaten after defeating Tottenham Hotspurs 3-0 yesterday at Spurs Lodge in London, via goals from Tobago striker Kennya “Ya Ya” Cordner.
T&T led 1-0 at the half before Cordner put the Soca Princesses further ahead with a goal in the 52nd minute, and added a second from the penalty spot in the 87th minute. In earlier matches, Trinidad and Tobago had also beaten semi-professional Reading FC 4-1 and Queen’s Park Rangers 7-1. Cordner ended the series with six goals, after getting four against QPR.
Yesterday’s match was also a bit fiery at times and saw each team having a player sent off in the 68th minute. Prior to that, Trinidad and Tobago were off to a quick start and got several chances early in the match, including when 26-year-old striker Cordner struck the post in the 18th minute.
Spurs play their football in the Premier League, which is one flight between the top-flight two-division semi-professional FA Women Super League.
They are currently in full pre-season preparation for the impending new season, and are due to play another warm-up against Arsenal Ladies, the top women’s club team in England. Spurs had apparently been relishing a battle with Trinidad and Tobago according to the club’s website.
“Pre-season has gone really well, the girls have trained hard and we’ve played three friendlies so far and won them all,” Girls & Women Football Development manager Karen Hills said before the match.
“Now we’ve a step up in opposition against Trinidad & Tobago, who are touring the country and playing a few matches. It’s a great challenge for us. It’s been a case of so far, so good this summer with three wins out of three against Ebbsfleet (3-0), Maidenhead (2-0) and Exeter (5-4).”
