T&T advances without conceding a goal

T&T Under-17 women’s Soca Warriors recorded yet another shut-out victory, 4–0 over host St Kitts/Nevis to top their Caribbean Football Union Group Three World Cup preliminary round qualifiers at the Elquemedo T Willet Park, Charlestown, St Kitts, on Wednesday night.

The win for the Rajesh Latchoo-coached T&T young women, followed previous convincing victories over Dominica (4–0) and British Virgin Islands (8–0) to end with maximum nine points, three more than host St Kitts/Nevis which defeated BVI (3–1) and Dominica (1–0) in their other matches.

However, due to the passage of a Tropical Storm, the T&T squad and technical staff which was due to return home yesterday but will not do so until Saturday after St Kitts airport was ordered closed.

Speaking yesterday, Sheldon Phillips, general secretary of the T&T Football Federation confirmed that the team will not returning home until Saturday, and added that everything was in place to make their extended stay away from home a comfortable one.

Phillips added: “The Caribbean Football Union sent out some information to all the federations involved in which they explained what was happening, and on our end we had discussions with and approached the Sports Company of T&T and Ministry of Sports, for the necessary finances to deal with the team’s unplanned extended stay in St Kitts/Nevis.

“We have been in contact with coach Latchoo and the team, and all is positive within the camp as be expected after having topped their qualifying group.”

T&T and St Kitts/Nevis now join Group One winner Cuba, and runner-up Dominican Republic; Group Two winner, Haiti; Jamaica, and Barbados, the winner and runner-up of Group Four and host Puerto Rico in the CFU eight-team final round. In Group One, Cuba gained nine points from three games, Dominican Republic earned six after winning two games, Cayman Islands got three points from winning one game and the Bahamas failed to earn a point by losing all three games.
