Still recovering from the vehicular accident that claimed the life of her good friend boxing champion Giselle Salandy, injured footballer Tamar Watson journeyed to Harris Promenade, San Fernando yesterday to witness the acrobatic display of Universal Cheerleaders and skilful drumming of the Blue Devils Drumline of California, USA.
Seated in her wheelchair taking in the action on the bandstand, Watson, 21, told Newsday it was one of her rare outings since being injured. She said she welcomed any opportunity to be out of the house for a while.

Watson said: “I love and enjoy the drumline and quite familiar with the cheerleaders as they are always part of our football games. The atmosphere is always electric.”

Following the January 4 tragedy in which her legs were broken and hip injured, Watson a junior at Shouter Hawks College in Georgia, USA was unable to return to classes abroad. She now studies online from her home in Pointe-a- Pierre.

Quite upbeat, she told Newsday, “Everything’s good with me. The legs are good and although doctors have recommended that I do not put too much pressure on them, I still take my chances and do a little walking. She added: “Emotionally, I’m also doing fine and healing well as all the memories of Giselle are good.”

“I’ll be in front my television tonight (Wednesday night) watching as Giselle’s name is called as the Sportswoman of the Year for 2008. There is no doubt in mind that she will get it.”

The late boxing champ was among prominent sportsmen and women nominated by the First Citizens Sports Foundation for Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year awards held at the Queen’s hall Wednesday night. She told Newsday she is confident that very soon she’ll “be back at 100 percent.”

Ten cheerleaders from the group Universal Cheerleaders and eight drummers of Blue Devils Drumline are in Trinidad and Tobago (TT) for the halftime performance at the 2009 CONCACAF World Cup qualifying match against Honduras at the Hasley Crawford Stadium on Saturday. Producer of the show American Leonard Neil said it was the group’s first visit to the island although they have toured extensively. They arrived in the country on Monday and are staying at Crowne Plaza Hotel.

“This is the third time we have been invited here and it’s good to finally make it.”
