Trinidad and Tobago’s National Under 20 Women’s Team began their quest for Germany 2010 in style with an easy 6-0 victory over St Kitts/Nevis in the second match of a double header on the opening day of action in the Caribbean Football Union qualifiers at the Marvin Lee Stadium on Wednesday.
After Jamaica had to labour for 90 minutes to edge a tricky Cuban outfit 1-0, the hosts had no problems in hitting the target with skipper Mariah Shade leading the way.
T&T didn’t dominate from the start and had to wait until 20th minute before going ahead through Shade to the delight of the home fans, who had been eagerly awaiting the sight of their girls going ahead.
And it didn’t take much longer for them to have more to cheer about as Natasha St Louis doubled the advantage in the 23rd minute. And Shade made sure the T&T girls were sitting pretty and comfortable in the dressing room at half time when she finished well in first half added on time.
St Kitts were never in with a shout and T&T custodian Kimika Forbes had very little to do on the evening.
Kaylor Taylor pushed T&T further ahead in the 57th minute and she notched her double and her team’s fifth in the 67th. Substitute Karissa Rodney got T&Ts sixth item in the 76th minute.
In the opener, Jamaica got an 11th minute winner from Sashana Campbell to see off the plucky Cubans. T&T will face Cuba and St Kitts tackle Jamaica at the same venue on Friday evening.
The teams are battling for one of three spots from the Caribbean to contest the Concacaf final round in Guatemala next January when eight nations will compete for places in the 2010 Finals in Germany. Already through to the Concacaf final round are USA, Guatemala, Mexico and Canada. The other team will come from Central America. Some of the teams already qualified for the World Cup in Germany include England, Sweden, France, Switzerland, Japan, Korea Republic and Korea DPR.
The FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup will get under way in Germany on 13 July 2010, with the best young players in the women's game on show in Augsburg, Bielefeld, Bochum and Dresden for three weeks. The final will be played in Bielefeld on 1 August.
Sixteen teams will be doing battle, for the fifth time, for one of the main trophies in the women's game.
St. Kitts-Nevis upstaged by fit T&T women

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad-THE Federation’s U-20 women’s team suffered a crushing 6-0 defeat last night (Nov. 18) against Trinidad & Tobago at Marvin Lee Stadium.
The two teams were competing in the final round of qualification ahead of the January 2010 CONCACAF U-20 Women’s Qualifiers.
St. Kitts-Nevis began the encounter well and was able to answer the drives of Trinidad & Tobago to keep the game scoreless through the first 20 minutes.
However, it was not long before the largely overseas Trinidadian team drew first blood with a salvo from skipper Mariah Shade.
The goal signaled a major collapse in the St. Kitts-Nevis back line as Natasha St. Louis scored in minute 23 and Shade made a hard drive late in the half to boost the team’s lead to 3-0 at the whistle.
Scoring opportunities were few and far between for the Federation due to the energetic pace that Trinidad & Tobago kept up when play resumed.
The scoring barrage picked up for the hosts again around minute 57 thanks to a well-placed strike by Kaylor Taylor, but she was not finished for the night and came back ten minutes later to add her second.
The sixth and final goal for Trinidad & Tobago came at minute 76 to give the team their decisive 6-0 victory.
Jamaica opened the evenings matches against Cuba was a much closer affair, and the Reggae Girls struggled against the technical Cubans on their way to a 1-0 victory.
Tomorrow (Nov. 20), St. Kitts-Nevis will continue their quest to qualify for the next round of competition when they face Jamaica at 5 p.m.
The top three teams from this round of competition shall move on to January’s final round of CONCACAF qualification where they will face USA, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Mexico and Canada.
From there, the top teams would move on to the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, which is scheduled to begin in Germany on July 13, 2010.
Soca Princesses seek to close down Cuba.

T&T’s Soca Princesses will be looking to continue their dominance in the Caribbean Football Union’s (CFU) final round qualifiers when they meet Cuba tonight at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Macoya.
The local girls are highly favoured, following their 6-0 mauling of St Kitts and Nevis in their opening game on Wednesday. Cuba suffered a 1-0 defeat to the fearsome Jamaicans in the other game of a double header.
Sashana Campbell netted the lone goal for Jamaica but the small crowd on hand were then treated to a procession of ball retrieval from the back of the net by the St Kitts/Nevis custodian, Jasmine Jarvis.
Mariah Shade and Kayla Taylor scored doubles for T&T while Karissa Rodney and Natasha St Louis also got on the scoresheet. The local girls started shakily but eventually took control of the match to live up to coach Marlon Charles’ promise of a more aggressive style.
They starved the visitors of ball possession and constantly pounded at the goal. T&T had an opportunity to open the scoring in the 7th minute, through a corner by Tobago born, Karyn Forbes, but good defending kept the ball out of the net.
Four minutes later, Shade had a clear-cut shot on goal but failed to convert. She continued to press however, working well with Taylor and Natasha St Louis up front. The trio shared a great percentage of their team’s ball possession as the midfield looked non-existent with Forbes shouldering most of the weight.
Finally in the 20th, a poor clearance by St Kitts/Nevis after a corner by Forbes, found Taylor who passed to Shade, for the prolific striker to register her first goal. Two minutes later, a superb cross by Latifah Kelly to Shade resulted in T&T’s second goal.
Shade found St Louis who made no mistake running in from right. Shade got her double in added on time of the first half to put T&T 3-0 up. Eleven minutes into the second half, Taylor put her stamp on the match and doubled her tally ten minutes later, finding the back of the net from another beautifully placed Forbes corner.
Karissa Rodney rounded off the scoring in the 76th minute to help put T&T ahead of the standings on goal difference. The top three teams will qualify for the Concacaf finals next year January in Guatemala.
