The Orange men’s soccer team (2-0-1) remained unbeaten with a 1-0 shutout of UNC-Wilmington (1-2-0) on Friday, Sept. 5 in its opening match at the Mayor’s Cup held at Hartwick’s Elmore Field. Senior Kyle Hall (Toronto, Ontario) scored the game’s only goal in the 69th minute to secure the victory.
Sophomore Geoff Lytle (Miami Beach, Fla.), making his first career start, assisted on Hall’s goal. It was Lytle’s team-leading second helper of the season.
Senior keeper Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) made three saves, all of which came in the first half, to earn the shutout. It was Cavicchia’s second shutout of the season.
The Orange defense turned in another stellar performance, holding the Seahawks to seven shots, including just one in the final 45 minutes. Nassim Berhouni, Caito Heiland and Devan Carroll led UNC-Wilmington with two shots each.
Seahawks’ goalie Brandon Miller took the loss. He made one save in the contest.
Syracuse will face Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday, Sept. 7 in its final match at the Mayor’s Cup. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m.
