The Incarnate Word men’s soccer team ended its five-game road trip to start the 2010 season ended with a 4-0 shutout victory over Texas-Permian Basin on Sunday in Odessa.

UIW (4-1 overall, 0-1 Lone Star Conference) got goals from Callum Riley, Troy Thompson, Jesus Cortez and Vincent Bailey to bounce back from the team’s first loss of the season on Friday night to Midwestern State.

Riley, who leads the team with five goals in as many games, got the Cardinals on the scoreboard first, getting a well-placed pass from Thompson to get in behind the defense and alone against the Falcons’ goalkeeper.

UIW’s second goal came from Cortez, who took a pass from the sideline from Stefan Vivar from approximately 35 yards out and blasted the ball past the goalie for a 2-0 lead in the 36th minute.

Thompson got his goal in the 71st minute off a pass from Dustin Lemley about ten feet in front of the net for the 3-0 lead. Bailey score as time expired, beating the defense and getting one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

The goal was Bailey’s third of the season (second on the team). Thompson’s goal was the second tally in two games.

The shutout win for UIW goalie Chris Fidler was his first of the season. He made two saves.

The Cardinals will play their first home game of the season at 7 p.m. on Friday night against Texas A&M International University, which UIW already defeated TAMIU, 2-1, earlier this year.
