The Mid-Continent University men's soccer team showed on Tuesday that they do not mind playing away from home.
The Cougars (5-3, 1-0) ran their record to 3-1 on the road this season, snatching a 3-1 victory over the Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) Trojans (4-3-1, 0-1) in Nashville in come-from-behind fashion. The Trojans struck first in the third minute, as Mid-Continent goalkeeper Jonatas Polesello seemed to misjudge a shot from the foot of Trevecca's Jonathan Baskin. Baskin's shot appeared to be headed high, but at the last moment dove down under the crossbar and into the net, giving Trevecca the early 1-0 lead.
From that point on, the first half belonged to the Cougars. Mid-Continent possesed the ball for much of the first half, firing a total of 11 shots at Trevecca netminder Hayden Coffman. in the 13th minute, Jan Chvojan pulled the cougars level. Mervyn Hazelwood crossed a ball into the box for Chvojan, who buried the chance to get the Cougars on the board. However, despite firing more than twice as many shots as the Trojans in the period, the Cougars were unable to pull ahead before halftime, and at intermission, the game was deadlocked at 1-1.
In the second half, the Cougars got a huge break early. In the early stages of the half, Chet Hemenway fired a shot through traffice that got past Polesello but clanged off the inside of the post and stayed out of the goal. the Cougars were able to clear the rebound away, and less than 10 minutes later Chvojan struck again. Chvojan converted a feed from Keagan Bacchus in the 62 minute for his eight goal of the season and second of the match to pull the Cougars out in front. The goal proved to be the game winner - Chvojan's fourth of the season - and just 2:20 later, Bacchus tallied a goal of his own for insurance to provide the final margin of 3-1.
Chvojan and Bacchus have combined for nearly three-fourths of the Cougars' goals (13 of 18) and over 60 percent of the teams statistical points (33 of 54) on the year.
Polesello (1-2) earned his first victory of the season, making four saved in the process, while Coffman (4-3-1) was saddled with the loss despite making nine stops.
The Cougars will be back in action on Saturday as a part of Mid-Continent's Spirit Day. The Cougars will do battle with the Union (Tenn.) University Bulldogs (3-4-1. 1-0) at 2 p.m.
