CARLOS EDWARDS has vowed to rediscover the form that made him one of League One's hottest properties last season.

The Wrexham wing-back admits fans have not seen the best of him since he returned to first-team action last month after a lengthy spell out with a serious knee ligament injury.

But Edwards, who remains keen to pen a new contract with the Dragons once the club's ownership issue is resolved, is determined to get back to his best.

He said: "I try to give my all every game, I'll always do that for Wrexham, but it's not been easy coming back after going such a long time without even kicking a ball.

"I've been giving my all but I know I've not been myself in the last couple of games. I don't know what has gone wrong, I've had a bad spell, but I want to get back to how I know I can play.

"The fans know what I've been through and I want to come back and start playing well for them.

"I know I'm not back to my best yet, but it takes time to get over the kind of injury I've had."

Edwards, who was injured playing for Trinidad and Tobago in a World Cup qualifier against the Dominican Republic last June, made his first-team return for the Dragons in the 5-1 defeat to Tranmere on January 15.

Ironically, he was one of Wrexham's better players that day, but the 26-year-old feels his performances in recent weeks have slipped below the high standard he sets himself.

"That's not me," he said, reflecting on his displays in the recent home games against Colchester and MK Dons.

"The fans know I can do better and I know I can do better.

"I wish I was never injured and could have played all season for Wrexham.

"It was so frustrating not being able to go out there and play. But I'm taking things one step at a time. "Everyone has got their own opinion, I just go into every game and try to do my best.

"People are going to have their say, but there is nothing I can do about that. I know I can play much better."

A string of superb performances saw Edwards attract interest from Preston North End last season, with Wrexham rejecting a six-figure bid from the Lancashire club in early June.

His current Wrexham deal expires in the summer, but rather than sign for another club on a free transfer Edwards says his preferred option would be to remain at the Racecourse.

The continued uncertainty surrounding the club's future has prevented boss Denis Smith from opening contract negotiations with any of his playing staff, but Edwards said: "I'm still looking for a new contract at Wrexham, and I've spoken to the manager about it.

"Hopefully when the new people take the club over, I'll be able to sit down and put pen-to-paper on something. I want to stay here. But at the moment I'm just concentrating on trying to get Wrexham out of trouble."

Edwards is looking forward to this Saturday's visit to Hartlepool United, although he knows relegation-haunted Wrexham will have their work cut out against a side which has lost just three of their last 17 games.

"They're a good team, but we've got to believe we can beat them," he said..

"I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that we can get out of trouble.

"We haven't lost too many times recently, but there have been too many draws.

"We can get better and we are only six points from safety, so that isn't a lot to make up.

"A couple of wins could change it all."
