Benedict Barrett continued his rich run of form to help earn Queen Park (QPCC) promotion into the National Super League Premier Division next season, after it got past T&T Prison Services FC 3-1 in the CNG Super League Championship Division final round decider on Monday night at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo.`
Going into the contest one point behind T&T Prison Services, Queen’s Park knew they had to get full points to book a place in the National Super League Premier Division next season. Barrett’s 54th minute goal gave Queen’s Park a 3-0 lead early in the second half, before Questelle Walters scored a consolation item for Prisons in the 85th minute.
In the first half Shabaka Mahluli opened the scoring for Queen’s Park in the 20th minute, before Jason Devenish got on the scoresheet one minute before the halftime whistle. Queen’s Park also won $120,000 for the top prize.
The match between the two team was scheduled to be played on December 15 but a power outage in Port-of-Spain shortly before kick off forced the officials to postpone the match.
Edinburgh survived relegation with a 2-1 win over Petit Valley United FC. Calvi Grazette broke the deadlock on the stroke of halftime to give Edinburgh a 1-0 lead at the break.
There was late drama in the match as two goals were scored in the last four minutes. Keston Bibby-Cummings equalized for Petit Valley, before David Lendor rescued Edinburgh with a goal one minute before full time.
Meanwhile, Cunupia’s Stevon Stoute and UTT’s Jamal Creighton shared the scoring title, both finishing on 22 goals.
Mikheil Peters of Barrackpore United was on behind them on 21 goals, a fine performance, given that Barrackpore finished fourth from the bottom.
Hector Sam, the former national striker, had the fourth-highest tally of 18 goals for Saddle Hill Hotspur.
The CNG Super League now takes a break for the holidays; action will resume in the Premier Division on January 7th
