With the win, Phoenix were placed against league second placed team WASA for their quarterfinal encounter which takes place tomorrow at WASA, St Joseph. Phoenix joined St Francois Nationals in the “quarters” after the latter played to an exciting 3-2 away win to Eagles United at the Woodford Lodge, Chaguanas, on Monday.
In the opening match of the knock-out stage on Monday, St Francois started perfectly when Marc Borde scored within ten minutes. Jesse Alexis struck a second for the visitors soon after in the 12th minute.
Just after the half hour mark, Ian James took one back for the hosts, to make the score 2-1 going into half time. With a match on, Eagles suffered a heavy blow in the 61st minute when Michael Renaud stopped a certain goal bound effort with his arm, which ultimately saw him ejected from the field.
St Francois attacker Wendell Douglas stepped up to the spot but saw his effort denied by Eagles’ Perry Martin in goal. Douglas, however, made up for his missed opportunity with a stunning effort on the edge of the 18 yard box to score, putting his team 3-1 up with 20 minutes left.
Eagles were then given an opportunity from the penalty spot when a St Francois player also handled in the box. James who scored in the first half got his second in the 85th. With the win, St Francois set up a date with league leaders Stokely Vale at the Plymouth Recreation Ground, Tobago, today.
