Debe Secondary and St Augustine won respective crowns in the South and East Zones, after completing victories in the BGTT Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL), on Sunday.

Debe Secondary, the defending South Zone champions claimed a 3-0 win over Vessigny Secondary at home, with Kayla Taylor getting a double and Shanelle Arjoon adding the other.

Debe, the most dominant team in schoolgirls’ football recorded its seventh consecutive win, with one match outstanding, with its nearest challenger Vessigny Secondary way behind on nine points from six matches.

St Augustine, meanwhile, has done just what Debe did and more, with an even more impressive run of eight wins from as many matches, and has produced by far the most potent attacking force in all four zones, with 58 goals from the start of the campaign, all the while remaining perfect defensively without conceding a single goal.

Its eighth win came on Sunday, when the team demolished El Dorado East 5-0, which was only four goals shy of the 9-0 thrashing inflicted last month.

The race remains tight in the North Zone, with defending zonal champions St Francois trailing Providence by two points, but with a match in hand. Providence closed the gap with St Francois with a chaotic 9-4 win over St Joseph’s Convent, with both Jordan van Reeken and Kelly-Ann Arrindell scoring a hat-trick each, while St Francois stumbled with a 2-2 draw with Holy Name.

St Francois’ Della Joseph opened after only two minutes, but her effort was quickly cancelled out by Holy Name standout Denise Tucker, who scored first in the 12th and then in the 34th minute. St Francois replied in the 50th minute from Tyricia McDonald as both teams settled for a point.

The top two teams will meet at President’s Ground, St Ann’s, in the girls’ SSFL match of the round, tomorrow (Thursday). It is Providence’s final match, while St Francois remains with one more fixture which will be against third-placed St Joseph’s Convent on Sunday. St Joseph’s has already beaten St Francois late last month in a 4-3 thriller.

With several outstanding matches to be played in Tobago, it remains too early to call a winner. However, with Signal Hill beating Scarborough Secondary 1-0 on Sunday, they remain favourites to take the title with an impressive four wins in five matches, with two matches to play to catch up with Mason Hall, which is on the same number of points after seven matches.

Mason Hall suffered a 4-0 defeat to Bishop’s, which is also on 12 points at the top, with six matches played. All zones will be back in action tomorrow, with the attention turned to the potential title decider in the North Zone.
