FOR the seventh consecutive year, Debe High School has retained their coveted Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Girls South Zone title.
Since the start of the competitive season, Debe High has been unbeatable. The dominant south school affirmed themselves another South Zone title on Sunday, when they breezed past Vessigny High 3-0.
Yesterday, they were scheduled to do battle against Point Fortin Secondary in their final South Zone match. Whether win or loss, the Debe girls would still victoriously emerge as champions of the south.
Speaking to team manager Clive Auguste yesterday, he revealed that the squad is keen on retaining their League and Intercol titles, which they unavoidably lost in the 2011 season.
“We’re aiming for a clean sweep of titles this year and we’re looking for revenge for our titles (League/ Intercol). The squad has already conquered south and now we’re aiming to go at the top schools in north and in the east,” he stated.
With the addition of a couple new and younger players on the team this year, Auguste admitted that the fusion of talent has been a positive one.
He openly acknowledged the more experienced players such as captain Patrice Vincent, forward Kayla Taylor, central defender Akilah Sparks, right-back Amanda Theodore and goalkeeper Kazzy Grant.
“The more experienced girls have been setting a good trend and example for the younger players. They are playing well together and this is a very positive thing for the squad. The team has been playing exceptionally well so far,” he added.
He continued, “Patrice has always been and will continue to be a great captain for us. Kayla has missed some games but she’s scoring a lot so that’s a plus.
The defenders are also doing a fine job, if I’m not mistaken we may have only conceded one goal for the competition thus far. Which brings me to Kazzy, she has significantly improved over the past year and was a good replacement (for Linfah Jones).”
Auguste also hailed newcomer Rayann Montano for an improved season. He also lauded Shenika Paul and Shenelle Arjoon for their player consistency. In addition, the team manager heaped praises on coach Arnold Murphy for producing another strong team, as they continue their 2012/ 2013 competitive campaign.
“Coach Murphy has the formula for any football team. He has been working really hard and his works are showing on the field by the girls,” said Auguste.
With the BGTT/ First Citizens Girls Intercol scheduled to begin on Sunday 28, the south team is determined to give their best performances, all in an effort to retain their League and Intercol titles. Auguste admitted that this was the team’s overall goal for this competitive season.
