Speedy overseas-based professional Kennya "Ya Ya" Cordner scored seven goals to lead San Juan Jabloteh to the top of the Lucky Bakery Women's Super League by a point over the Trinidad and Tobago National Under-17 team.
On Friday night at Barataria Oval, Jabloteh (15 points) won for a fifth straight time when outclassing Arima Giants 15-0, while the National Under-17s (14 points) had a much tougher time in a very competitive second match of the double-header, which they drew goalless against a good Malick City team.
Just 22, Tobago-born Cordner has already played with Northampton Laurels FC in the US Women's Premier Soccer League, Kvårnsveden IK in Sweden, and Brisbane in Australia's Westfield W-League. What most attracts teams to the T&T winger is her pace and ability to dribble the ball.
Named Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) Women's Player of the Year in 2005 and 2010, the destructive Cordner got goals in the 20th, 36th, 48th, 70th, 72nd, 89th and 90th minutes.
Midfielder Attiya Penco (4th, 30th, 32nd, 42nd) got four goals and Denisha Thomas (10th, 35th) got a brace.
Right-winger Chantal Walcott had set up many of the goals and deservedly got one from the penalty spot in the 46th, after she was brought down in the area.
Carissa Romero also scored almost immediately on replacing Rayanna Boswell in the 85th.
Star-studded Jabloteh also fielded former T&T number one goalie Nicole Mitchell, national senior captain Tasha St Louis, elusive winger Walcott and sturdy former national junior defender Sharice Arthur.
They met a young Arima Giants team, whose best attacking player, Ashley Mark, played in central defence because they were missing some regulars at the back. But Jabloteh showed no mercy.
The winners attacked from the first minute, with Cordner and an equally penetrative Walcott constantly breaching the Giants defence on the flanks. Penco started the scoring in the fourth and Thomas then put in the rebound off a hot Cordner shot which Giants keeper Shunice Rowley did well to keep out.
With the score 2-0, Penco then scored twice from close up within two minutes and the rout began.
Most of Cordner's penetrative runs ended in goals and her best came when intercepting a poor defensive clearance and hitting a low bullet in off the far post.
Giants had no one who could even kick the ball out of their area. They were a frustrated bunch and, under pressure, one of the Arima defenders got spun around and unnecessarily kicked the ball for a corner.
When confronted by teammates, she shouted: "What all yuh want meh to do? Ah fed up!"
Apparently, some of Jabloteh's players were frustrated at not scoring goals. One wanted to fight and got a yellow card. Another, Rayanna Boswell, was so peeved at missing an easy chance that she rolled around on the ground in frustration, got up and signalled for the bench to take her off. Boswell soon got her wish.
