A lone first half goal from Deon Lewis gave Coosal’s Las Lomas United the Central Football Association (CFA) Hugo Francis Memorial Cup, on Sunday, after the club edged Eagles United 1-0 in the final, at the Hugo Francis Recreation Ground, Chaguanas.
The win saw Las Lomas cop the top cash prize of $4,000 and the Hugo Francis Memorial Cup, both of which were presented following the final from Mayor of Chaguanas, Orlando Nagessar. Las Lomas was made to earn the title after fighting from three goals down to win its semifinal over Enterprise Youths FC on penalty kicks. The latter club had by all indications booked a spot in the final after Denzil Daniel (15th), Kefim Blackford (25th) and Tavream Sobers (31st) gave Enterprise the seemingly unassailable half-time lead.
However, Steven Lewis pulled one goal back in the 47th minute, which sparked the famous come-back. It was followed less than a minute later, when Lewis, the lone goal-scorer in the final made it 3-2. The other semifinal saw Eagles United drop Xtrafoods Chaguanas FC 2-0.
Despite the loss, Chaguanas FC did well to reach to the last four stage, after it defeated the defending champion of the Memorial Cup, Cunupia FC, 5-4 on penalty kicks. That fixture also ended 3-3.
When the presentation was made following the finals, the CFA Youth Under-15 and Under-17 Championship winners to the third placed finishers were all presented with their trophies. Crown Trace FC took home the winners’ title in both divisions, while Cap Off Youths also finished runner-up in both. Tabaquite FC and Edinburgh 500 took the third place trophies in the Under-17 and the Under-15 divisions, respectively.
Action will restart in the CFA Premier Division with three matches in the Henry Franklin Group and two in the Hugo Francis Group.
