Stern John is aiming for a sporting double - he will not be satisfied until Coventry are back in the Premiership and the West Indies are "black-washing" England again.

The Trinidad and Tobago international linked up with Peter Reid's men on Tuesday - as exclusively revealed in the Sunday Mercury two weeks ago - and made an immediate impact with a goal in the 2 -2 draw with Gillingham.

But that should come as no surprise, as John scored on his debut for both Birmingham City and Nottingham Forest after his arrival from Columbus Crew in 1999.

John, 27, is hoping to provide the goals that fire Coventry to promotion, just as he did with Blues two years ago, but he also wants to see a revival in West Indies cricket.

The men from the Caribbean have lost seven Tests out of eight against England this year and he admits it is hard to take.

"I can remember when the West Indies were thrashing England on home soil," said John, who has a deep passion for cricket. "Obviously it looks as if the wheel has turned full circle at present, but I know we will come back.

"If the situation doesn't improve then I will have to go back to the Caribbean and take up cricket again!"

With the explosion of football in the West Indies since the late 90s, there were concerns that the cricket decline was terminal.

But John believes it is only a temporary blip and normal service will be resumed sooner rather than later.

"Cricket is still very popular but we didn't have much of a youth policy," he added. "All that has changed now and systems are in place so we should have a conveyor belt of talent for the future - which is bad news for England!"

John is also highly impressed with what he has seen at Highfield Road and believes promotion is a real possibility.

Reid's men have made a solid start to the season and John can see similarities with Blues' promotion-winning side of two years ago.

"This squad has as much talent as Birmingham's did," he said. "We have definitely got a chance of promotion.

"To score a goal on my debut was fantastic and has really given me confidence. I hope it is the first of many."
